So I've decided to talk today about a very anticipated movie coming out this year: Guillermo Del Toro's "Pacific Rim".
The plot is something most film geeks would be skeptical about, rightfully. Set in a kind of dystopian future, it tells a story in which enormous monsters have risen from beneath the Earth's crust and are reigning havoc on an unsuspecting humankind. However, the humans decide its time to stand up tall against the gigantic beasts, so they construct tower-high robots to fight them. And essentially, the film is about giant robots fighting giant monsters. When I first heard about that, I thought "this could either be really cool or really bad"... then I saw Guillermo Del Toro attached as director, and I thought this has a good fighting chance of being awesome... then I saw this trailer, and it instantly cleared all my doubts. This looks f***ing incredible!
What instantly drew me in was the scope and scale of the film, from the looks of the trailer. Most people don't know Guillermo Del Toro is a big fan of the video game "Shadow of The Colossus" (a masterpiece, by the way. Play it if you haven't). And the video game is large in scale too (featuring huge monsters) so it looks like Del Toro is drawing a lotta inspiration in capturing that epic, larger-than-life figures and designs. And it doesn't look anything like Transformers neither. It actually looks a lot more like the great granddaddy of "Real Steel". From the looks of it, there's plenty of cool sci-fi tropes to it as well. And is that GLaDOS from Portal doing the voice-work of the robot headquarters? Hell yeah! I'm also looking forward to Idris Elba and what he can bring to the table. He is developing into a phenomenal actor, and for him to take the lead in a sci-fi film (Prometheus... meh) makes it all the more engaging.
So far, this may be my most anticipated movie of 2013, next to Nicolas Winding Refn's "Only God Forgives" (look out for that preview soon). If things work out, we could have a solidly entertaining year with big (very big) concepts.
