Preview: "Evil Dead" (2013)

Very excited today to talk about another one of the most anticipated films of 2013: the inevitable remake of Sam Raimi's classic horror film, "Evil Dead".

Just to quickly recap on the history of this franchise: in 1981 a small-time director named Sam Raimi created a cult-classic of the horror genre called "The Evil Dead". It starred a young star named Bruce Campbell, and featured one of the most ludicrous and over-the-top plots in film history. It's combination of all-out horror and slapstick comedy made for a remarkably tolerable and unique vibe, and set the bar for destined horror/comedys to come, such as "Shaun of The Dead", "The Cabin In The Woods" and the films own transcendant sequel, "Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn". It followed with the third film of the franchise, "Army of Darkness", and finalized its legacy as a trilogy. However, director Sam Raimi has expressed interest in re-creating the series because he felt what he wanted to achieve with the original wasn't good enough. So now we have this, the "right" version. And wow, this looks ridiculously twisted!

From the vibe of the trailer alone, you get the sense that this isn't gonna be your typical horror film. It honestly reminds me of a much more terrifying version of "The Cabin In The Woods", but, you know, this being the originator of the 'cabin' horror trope. It's gruesome, gory, and vomit-inducing. It's the perfect horror film! And ever since last years surprise hit with Joss Whedon's own cabin story, we've been longing for more horror films done justice and done to the effect of this. And it looks like we may have a winner on our hands.

From what I can see, the film barely has recognizable stars attached to it. Well, there's Jessica Lucas, that extremely hot chick from "Cloverfield". But that's about all I can pull out. The others will have plenty of acting chops to perfect if they're ever going to come close to the charisma and stupidity of the originals "Evil Dead" cast. Or maybe they were meant to different. Who knows. Whatever direction Raimi is taking with this one looks to shatter the over-the-top excess of the original with killer panache. And I really haven't been this excited for a horror film since M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village".

So sit back and enjoy the trailer below. And if you think you know what you're in for: Well, think again. This is gonna blow you away in one way or another.

"Evil Dead" releases on the 12 April 2013
